In the opening quarter of 2026, Avalon Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center ranked as Mercer County’s second-largest nursing facility, sharing this spot with two others, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Lawrence Rehab & HCC/The Meadows at Lawrence and Carnegie Post Acute Care at Princeton, LLC also held the same ranking.

Figures indicate Avalon had 180 available beds—53 above Mercer County’s average for the first quarter of 2026. The facility provided care for an average of 146.4 residents during the period.

The nursing home received an overall 2 out of 5 rating from CMS, which is lower than the New Jersey statewide average of 3.4.

Hamilton Grove Healthcare and Rehabilitation, LLC topped the list as the largest nursing facility in Mercer County in the quarter, offering 218 beds.

During the first quarter of 2026, Avalon Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center incurred $95,091 in five fines and had five total penalties.

There were 14 for-profit nursing homes across Mercer County, New Jersey, as of this reporting.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the U.S. older adult population continues climbing as numbers among younger age groups go down. From 2020 to 2024, the count of Americans ages 65-plus rose by 13%, while the number of people under 18 fell by 1.7%. The nation’s older adult segment has expanded significantly in the past century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study suggests almost half of this group—about 28 million people—could need long-term services and support, with more than a third likely requiring nursing home care at some point.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
