Robert Francis Prevost, born in Chicago and having spent two decades in Peru, has been elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first pope from the United States. Prevost’s father was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and his mother worked as a librarian.

Dugan McGinley, a professor of religion at Rutgers University with expertise in contemporary Catholicism, discussed the implications of this election. McGinley expressed surprise at the selection due to “the demographics among the cardinals” and America’s significant global influence. However, he noted that Prevost was referred to as “the ‘least American of the Americans,'” which might have influenced the cardinals’ decision. His extensive experience in Peru and his role as Prefect for the Dicastery of Bishops made him well-known among cardinals.

The quick consensus on Prevost’s election is attributed to his close work with Pope Francis and his perceived alignment with Francis’s agenda. McGinley described him as “a very measured and soft-spoken man,” suggesting that he would be seen as a stable choice rather than a radical change.

Pope Leo XIV’s choice of name is significant. The last Pope Leo (Leo XIII) is remembered for his contributions to modern Catholic social justice, particularly through his encyclical Rerum Novarum. This new pope appears to align himself with that legacy.

McGinley also highlighted Prevost’s formation as an Augustinian, noting his emphasis on unity using St. Augustine’s teachings during his speech. As an important figure for many Christians, St. Augustine’s influence on Prevost suggests qualities like dedication and humility were central to his development.

Regarding whether Pope Leo XIV will continue Pope Francis’s legacy or adopt a more traditional approach, McGinley believes he will likely maintain Francis’s focus on pastoral concerns over doctrinal changes. Having participated in recent synods emphasizing dialogue within the church, Prevost seems poised to balance progressive ideas without alienating conservative bishops.

Looking ahead, Pope Leo XIV faces immediate responsibilities following ceremonial duties and initial liturgies.
