Rep. Frank Pallone, a longtime U.S. Congressman representing New Jersey’s 6th district since 1988, posted several statements on his social media account addressing concerns about free speech and the removal of slavery exhibits.
On September 17, 2025, Pallone wrote, “Either you’re for the first amendment, or you’re not.” Later that day, he criticized recent decisions regarding historical displays by stating, “Ordering the removals of slavery exhibits is morally bankrupt and dishonors those who suffered.”
Continuing his commentary on freedom of expression into the evening of September 18, Pallone commented on former President Donald Trump’s actions and their impact on constitutional rights. He said: “Trump is killing the First Amendment. His supporters claim to cherish “free speech,” yet punish anyone who challenges them. If a person you agree with has the right to speak, doesn’t everyone else? That freedom is the heart of America.”
Pallone’s remarks come in light of ongoing national debates over First Amendment protections and controversies surrounding public displays related to American history. He has represented New Jersey’s 6th District since succeeding James J. Howard in Congress in 1988 and previously served in the New Jersey Senate from 1984 to 1988. Born in Long Branch, New Jersey in 1951, Pallone holds degrees from Middlebury College and Rutgers University-Camden.
