The Rutgers University Board of Governors has announced the appointment of Matthew Young as the Harold H. Martin Professor of Mathematics Endowed Chair, effective July 1, 2024. Young is recognized internationally for his contributions to analytic number theory and is considered a leading figure in his field.
Young’s academic pursuits focus on analytic number theory, automorphic forms, L-functions, and elliptic curves. He has an impressive record of publications and has received continuous funding from the National Science Foundation amounting to approximately $1 million since 2008.
In 2024, Young was honored with the International Congress on Basic Science Frontiers of Science Award. His work has been showcased at major conferences worldwide, including a featured presentation at the Séminaire Nicolas Bourbaki.
Having joined Rutgers-New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences as a Professor of Mathematics in the past academic year, Young previously held positions at Texas A&M University as Professor and Director of the Mathematics Honors Program and Undergraduate Research. His tenure there lasted 17 years, beginning in 2007 after his time with the American Institute of Mathematics and Stanford University.
Young completed his Ph.D. in mathematics at Rutgers in 2004 under advisor Henryk Iwaniec, following a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1999.
