The Milltown Police Department announced on April 10 that it is accepting applications for the position of Entry-Level Municipal Police Officer. The department seeks candidates to join its force, with training set to begin at the Cape May County Police Academy in August 2026.

This hiring initiative is important as it offers individuals an opportunity to serve the community while joining a law enforcement agency dedicated to public safety and quality of life. The department highlights both the rewards and challenges of policing, noting that “policing is not simply a job—it is a calling. It demands courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to others.” Applicants must be prepared for unpredictable situations and maintain professionalism under pressure.

Applicants must meet several minimum requirements: they must be between 21 and 35 years old at appointment, U.S. citizens residing in New Jersey, hold a valid state driver’s license, possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent, and meet eligibility criteria set by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. Candidates may apply without prior police academy training or with Special Class I or II certification but should not have graduated from a PTC-approved Basic Course for Police Officers.

The selection process includes panel interviews, background checks, drug screening, physical fitness testing, as well as medical and psychological evaluations. Those selected will attend a six-month residential police academy program starting in August 2026.

Chief Chris Johnson said applicants should recognize that law enforcement involves inherent risks such as responding to emergencies involving injuries or life-threatening conditions and confronting violent individuals. He emphasized that “this profession is not for everyone,” highlighting the need for mental resilience and emotional strength.

The department encourages candidates with college education, military service experience in emergency services fields such as fire or EMS, or bilingual abilities to apply. Benefits include competitive salaries starting at $50,000 during academy training and comprehensive health coverage through the New Jersey State Health Plan.

Johnson concluded by stating: “If you understand the risks, accept the challenges, and still feel called to serve—this profession may be for you.” Applications are due by May 22.
