The Milltown Police Department is seeking candidates for a full-time Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) position. The department encourages individuals in the Middlesex County, New Jersey area who are interested in law enforcement careers to apply.
According to Chief Chris Johnson, starting as a PST provides valuable experience for those aiming to become correctional officers, police officers, state troopers, or federal agents. “Our track record speaks for itself, every PST we have hired who aspired to become a correctional officer, police officer, state trooper, or federal agent has successfully reached that goal,” said Johnson.
Chief Johnson emphasized the hands-on nature of the role. “Because PSTs gain a level of real-world experience that few entry points can match. From day one, they are immersed in the realities of public safety, handling calls for service, working with officers in the field, managing crises, exposure with prisoners, and mastering essential systems such as CJIS, Eagent, LENS, ALPR’s, and DMS. Simply put, PSTs are truly the first of the first responders.”
He also shared his personal connection to the job: “I can speak to this personally. I began my own career many years ago as a part-time PST, and that experience provided the foundation that ultimately led me to the Chief’s Office. It’s proof that dedication, professionalism, and hard work can take you a very long way in this profession.”
The department highlights that working as a PST offers exposure to various aspects of law enforcement operations from an early stage.
Applicants will receive a salary ranging from $43,000 to $67,000 per year on a Pitman schedule—14 days per month with steady shifts. Benefits include membership in OPEIU Local #32 union representation and participation in New Jersey State Health Benefits along with paid time off.
Chief Johnson concluded by encouraging those interested in serving their community or beginning a career in law enforcement to consider applying: “If you know someone who wants to begin their journey into law enforcement, or someone who simply wants to serve and support their community, encourage them to apply and join our team.”
Every career has a starting point.
This one just happens to start at the center of the action.
Sincerely,
Chief Chris Johnson
