The Milltown Police Department announced on Apr. 1 that it will install two new speed monitoring signs at both ends of Main Street next week. The department said the devices, known as ATS “SpeedAlert” Radar Message Signs, are intended to alert drivers of their current speed and notify them if they exceed the posted 30 mph limit.
Officials say the goal is to increase driver awareness and encourage voluntary compliance with traffic laws. The initiative comes with support from the Borough’s Public Safety Committee.
According to the department, these radar signs provide real-time feedback for motorists while also collecting continuous traffic data through a secure cloud-based system. This allows police administrators to analyze speeding patterns and deploy enforcement more efficiently.
The department reported measurable success with a similar sign previously installed on Ochs Avenue. Based on those results, settings for the new signs will be adjusted to discourage unsafe behavior such as attempting to test how high speeds can register.
“These efforts are not about enforcement alone; they are about prevention. The Milltown Police Department remains committed to promoting safe driving habits and protecting everyone who lives in, works in, or travels through our community,” Chief Chris Johnson said in a statement.
Looking ahead, officials say they are exploring smaller portable devices for use on residential streets in response to community concerns about speeding.
