Vincent Lo Re has been appointed as the director of the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Treatment Science (PETS) at Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research. Lo Re, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, was chosen after a comprehensive international search.
Lo Re’s research expertise includes chronic viral hepatitis infection, HIV/viral hepatitis coinfection, and drug-induced liver injury. He is known for pioneering the use of electronic health care data in studying liver diseases and developing computable phenotypes for various liver-related conditions.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lo Re collaborated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Sentinel System to assess COVID-related complications. His recent studies focus on drug-induced liver injury, including first-of-their-kind research on incidence rates and risks of acute liver failure due to drugs.
Brian Strom, chancellor of Rutgers Health, expressed his enthusiasm about Lo Re’s appointment: “I am delighted to welcome to Rutgers…a leader as superb and prominent as Dr. Lo Re.” Tobias Gerhard, director of IFH, added: “Vin is an exceptionally talented researcher and mentor.”
Lo Re served as president of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology in 2022 and holds positions such as Regional Editor for Pharmacoepidemiology & Drug Safety journal. He also chairs the FDA Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee.
Gerhard founded PETS in 2017. Since then, it has grown significantly with over $30 million in extramural funding. Lo Re aims to enhance PETS’ productivity by leveraging healthcare data innovatively.
“I’m honored to have been selected as director of PETS,” said Lo Re. “I look forward to working with schools and departments across Rutgers.”
Lo Re has authored over 200 papers using healthcare data. His accolades include awards from organizations like the HIV Medicine Association and International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology.
Lo Re holds degrees from Georgetown University and the University of Pennsylvania.
