Saint Peter’s Breast Center, part of Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, has received accreditation for the sixth consecutive time from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The center was the first in central New Jersey to achieve a full three-year accreditation from the NAPBC.

The NAPBC sets standards for breast centers to offer multidisciplinary and comprehensive breast cancer services. Accredited programs must address all aspects of breast cancer care, including prevention, screening, treatment, and survivorship. The program aims to guide both centers and patients toward evidence-based care.

“NAPBC accreditation reassures patients and their loved ones that Saint Peter’s Breast Center provides comprehensive and advanced care,” said Lisa Hopkins MD, breast surgeon with Astera Cancer Care who sees patients at Saint Peter’s Breast Center. “Receiving care close to home is not only convenient but alleviates additional stress and anxiety during treatment while allowing friends and family to provide support.”

Saint Peter’s Breast Center provides a range of services such as women’s imaging, screening and diagnostic mammography, bone density testing, breast surgery, radiation oncology, genetic counseling, survivorship services, physical rehabilitation, nutrition and social services, and lymphedema prevention and rehabilitation. The center uses HologicGenius3D Mammography technology, which has been shown to detect more invasive breast cancers than traditional 2D mammography. The 3DQuorum feature uses artificial intelligence to improve diagnosis accuracy and speed.

Radiation oncologists from Astera Cancer Care work with Saint Peter’s specialists to deliver cancer therapy at the hospital. The center now offers TrueBeam radiation therapy, which delivers high doses of radiotherapy with precision while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue. The automated system can reduce treatment times, with some sessions lasting as little as 20 minutes.

With NAPBC accreditation, Saint Peter’s also becomes an ACS Surgical Quality Partner. This designation reflects a commitment to improving procedures and outcomes and maintaining high standards in surgical quality.

“ACS Quality programs are grounded in more than a century of experience and participation. As an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, Saint Peter’s University Hospital has shown a commitment providing the best possible patient care, evaluating that care in a rigorous fashion, and dedicating themselves to continuous self-improvement,” said ACS Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Patricia L. Turner, MD, MBA, FACS.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital is a 478-bed acute-care teaching hospital sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen. It is recognized for nursing excellence and provides specialized services in areas such as pediatrics, oncology, orthopedics, and women’s health. The hospital is affiliated with Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization founded in 1913. With more than 88,000 members, it is the largest organization of surgeons worldwide.
