George Leibowitz, an interdisciplinary researcher and licensed clinician specializing in adult and adolescent mental health and substance abuse treatment, has been appointed dean for the School of Social Work at Rutgers University–New Brunswick.

"As an educator, interdisciplinary scholar, administrator, and social worker who is committed to helping individuals and elevating the common good, Dr. Leibowitz is an excellent match for SSW – the nation’s 16th ranked school of social work," said Rutgers–New Brunswick Chancellor Francine Conway.

Leibowitz's research is focused on the social determinants of health and health disparities, with a particular emphasis on using artificial intelligence to drive better health outcomes through informatics. He has also been involved in projects aimed at reducing health inequalities by race and socioeconomic status.

Before joining Rutgers, Leibowitz served at Stony Brook University, where he directed the doctorate program in social welfare and chaired the Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Committee. He has also worked on integrating behavioral health and primary care services and received significant grants for delivering behavioral health services to underserved populations.

Leibowitz's academic background includes a master's degree in social work and a doctorate degree from the University of Denver. He has also practiced at various institutions, providing program consultation, risk assessments, and clinical treatment to individuals in need.

In addition to his practical work, Leibowitz has contributed to the field through co-authoring published books and having his research featured in peer-reviewed journals. He has a wealth of experience in academia, having held leadership positions in various programs and departments.

Leibowitz takes over the role of dean from Richard L. Edwards, who served as interim dean before Leibowitz's appointment. Edwards, who is chancellor emeritus, University Professor, and Distinguished Professor, was instrumental in the recruitment process that brought Leibowitz to Rutgers.

Overall, Leibowitz's diverse background and expertise make him a fitting choice to lead the School of Social Work at Rutgers University–New Brunswick into the future.
