Rutgers–New Brunswick Appoints New Dean to Lead Graduate School of Education

Christopher M. Span, a scholar, historian, educator, and higher education administrator, has been appointed as the new dean for the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. Span, who currently serves as a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will assume his new role on July 1.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the appointment, Span stated, "I am absolutely thrilled about becoming the next dean of the Graduate School of Education." He highlighted the excellence of the GSE, its faculty, student body, research enterprise, and alumni, expressing confidence in further enhancing the school's reputation in the field of education.

Rutgers–New Brunswick Chancellor Francine Conway praised Span's contributions to the field of education, stating, “Through his research, teaching, and leadership, Dr. Span continues to make profound contributions to the field of education, enriching our understanding of the past while informing the future of education policy and practice.”

Span's research primarily focuses on the educational history of African Americans, particularly during the 19th century. He is acclaimed for his work in this area and has authored influential publications such as "From Cotton Field to Schoolhouse: African American Education in Mississippi, 1862-1875."

Apart from his scholarly endeavors, Span has held significant administrative roles at the University of Illinois, including positions as chief of staff and associate chancellor for administration and pre-K-12 initiatives. He has also been actively involved in professional organizations dedicated to the study of educational history.

At Rutgers, Span will succeed Dean Wanda J. Blanchett, who played a key role in recruiting him. Blanchett, having served as dean for 10 years, will continue to contribute to the Graduate School of Education as a faculty member.
