Emily S. Barrett has been appointed to the George G. Rhoads Endowed Legacy Professorship by the Rutgers University Board of Governors. In response to her appointment, Barrett expressed her gratitude, stating, “This is a particularly special honor for me given Dr. Rhoads’ reputation as a pioneer in environmental epidemiology and maternal-child health.”
Barrett, a professor and vice chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Rutgers School of Public Health, emphasized her commitment to following in Dr. Rhoads' footsteps by improving children's environmental health through impactful research and nurturing the next generation of public health leaders at Rutgers.
Dean Perry N. Halkitis praised Barrett, highlighting her as an exceptional scholar, epidemiologist, and community advocate. Halkitis commended Barrett for her work that bridges theory and practice to enhance the health of individuals and populations, as well as her dedication to teaching and mentoring future epidemiologists.
With a strong academic background, Barrett has authored over 190 scientific papers and book chapters, securing substantial funding from various National Institutes of Health programs. She holds a Ph.D. in biological anthropology from Harvard University and has previously held positions at the University of Rochester and the University of California-Los Angeles.
The George G. Rhoads Endowed Legacy Professorship, which honors Dr. Rhoads' legacy and supports epidemiology research at Rutgers, was made possible through a generous donation from George Grant Rhoads and matching funds from the RBHS Legacy Professorship Match Campaign.
