Stephanie Yuen, a senior nursing student at Rutgers School of Nursing, has turned her personal experience with alopecia into a mission to help others facing the same challenge. Diagnosed with alopecia at the age of 13, Yuen recalls the moment she noticed her hair loss, stating, "I decided to shave it off and gain that control."

Yuen's journey with alopecia inspired her to advocate for patients and become a voice for those in need. She expressed her dedication by saying, "I wanted to follow in those footsteps, essentially advocate for my patients, give them a voice and just be there for people. And if I can make their day a little better, it's worth it to me."

Beyond her academic pursuits, Yuen volunteers for organizations supporting individuals with alopecia, offering mentorship and guidance to children and their families navigating the emotional challenges associated with the condition. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, with Laura Stone, an associate director at the School of Nursing, praising Yuen's leadership and dedication to community service.

Despite her busy schedule, Yuen found time during the COVID-19 pandemic to write a memoir titled "Stronger Together," detailing her experiences with alopecia. Reflecting on her writing process, Yuen shared, "I think writing it out helps my emotions... I'm able to convey what I want to say. I think better in text sometimes."

Laura Stone, impressed by Yuen's commitment and resilience, highlighted her exceptional engagement and the positive impact she has on her peers. Yuen's advice to others emphasizes looking beyond appearances and getting to know individuals for who they truly are, stating, "Don't judge a book by its cover. My personality shines through, but also I think I'm beautiful."

As Yuen prepares to embark on her nursing career, her advocacy and unwavering support serve as an inspiration to both her peers and future patients.
