Regina Belle, a Grammy-winning artist and Rutgers University alumna, is set to be inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame on October 6. This recognition honors her extensive career in R&B, gospel, and jazz music. Belle's duet with Peabo Bryson on "A Whole New World," from Disney's Aladdin, notably reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won a Grammy Award in 1993.
Reflecting on her achievements, Belle expressed disbelief at being honored alongside artists she has long admired. “Being in the same company as people I have revered my entire life feels surreal,” she stated.
Throughout her career, Belle has released over ten albums featuring hits like "Make it Like it Was" and "If I Could." Recently, she contributed to a jazz album by Najee, produced by Barry Eastmond.
Belle initially left Rutgers just short of completing her degree to pursue her music career but returned in 2013 to finish her education. She graduated in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in Africana studies. Her decision was partly inspired by two young parishioners who doubted the value of college education. “This deeply alarmed me because it felt more like a worth statement rather than a plan or a choice,” Belle said.
Her academic journey continued as she earned a master of divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center earlier this year. This educational pursuit helped her cope with personal losses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Belle credits her experiences at Rutgers for providing the foundation for her success. “I go to the R&B awards,” she said, “with a great banner of wisdom, knowledge and unlimited life experience.”
