Nicholas Ferroni, a teacher at Union High School, has gained attention for his unique approach to education and his efforts in championing educational reform. Known as the "Sexiest Teacher Alive" by People magazine, Ferroni is not just a media figure but an active educator who prioritizes making a difference in his students' lives.
Despite opportunities to pursue more lucrative roles outside teaching, Ferroni remains committed to his position at Union High School, where he has taught history and cultural studies for 22 years. He emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community that shaped him. "This town, this school, my teachers and coaches are the reason I am the person I am," he said.
Ferroni's teaching methods include storytelling and immersive experiences aimed at encouraging students to think critically about societal issues. His educational philosophy was influenced by his experiences at Rutgers University and by professors such as John Chambers.
Ferroni is also known for launching initiatives like Union High School’s Gay Straight Alliance and Feminist Club. His work earned him recognition from organizations like the Human Rights Campaign and the United Nations’ Women’s Division.
One of Ferroni's notable classroom activities involved creating a female-majority "Class Congress" to highlight gender inequality in Congress. This lesson went viral on TikTok, catching the attention of Whoopie Goldberg from The View.
Beyond teaching, Ferroni uses social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to advocate for educational reforms such as the Pay Teachers Act. Despite his media presence, Ferroni remains humble about his role in education: “I’m not the best teacher in this school or state or this country."
