If you're caring for an older adult with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, you may have experienced moments when they say or do hurtful things. It can be difficult, but it's important to remember that these actions are often a result of the disease and not intentional.

To help manage difficult behavior, try to reduce distractions and create a calm environment. Use a soothing voice and speak slowly and directly to reassure and comfort your loved one.

It can also be helpful to keep a record of any challenging behavior, including the time and date, and any possible triggers. And don't forget to take breaks and seek support from family and friends or hire caregiving help to give yourself some time to recharge. Remember to take care of yourself, too.
