Rutgers sophomore Jake Thistle is balancing his academic pursuits with a thriving career as a singer-songwriter. Despite being two years away from completing his dual degree in communication and journalism and media studies, the 19-year-old has already achieved significant milestones in the music industry.

Thistle's journey as a musician began at a young age when he secured his first paying gig at a local ice cream shop in Paramus. Reflecting on his early experiences, Thistle humorously remarked, "I almost called it a residency," highlighting how those opportunities contributed to his growth as a writer.

With a decade of professional experience under his belt, Thistle has garnered praise and recognition for his musical talent. From recording albums to performing at renowned venues like The Winery in New York City and The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, Thistle's dedication to his craft is evident. He emphasized his commitment to music by stating, "As long as I can support myself playing music, the goal is to do it as long as I can."

Amidst his busy schedule of classes and performances, Thistle remains focused on his academic goals and the synergy between his majors and music career. He strategically chose his majors to enhance his skills as an artist and effectively collaborate with his publicist. Thistle's passion for writing and interest in politics have guided his academic pursuits, aligning with his profession as a musician.

Despite the demands of juggling a full-time student schedule and a thriving music career, Thistle maintains a sense of balance and enthusiasm for both aspects of his life. His ability to excel in both realms has garnered admiration from his peers and professors. Journalism professor Steven Miller commended Thistle's achievements, noting the seamless integration of his academic and musical endeavors.

Looking ahead, Thistle anticipates future opportunities to showcase his talents, including an upcoming performance at the COMMchella Music Festival at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. As he continues to navigate his dual roles as a student and musician, Thistle remains dedicated to honing his craft and pursuing his passion for music.
