Dan Corey, a Rutgers University alumnus, has established himself as a producer for NBC Nightly News. Before joining NBC, Corey had an opportunity that many student journalists dream of: interviewing then-President Barack Obama. This interview took place in 2016 when Obama was the commencement speaker at Rutgers.
During his time at Rutgers, Corey served as editor-in-chief of The Daily Targum and gained broadcasting experience with 88.7 WRSU-FM Rutgers Radio. These experiences contributed significantly to his career in journalism.
At NBC, Corey works on network specials and covers both national and international breaking news. His role includes contributing to coverage of major events such as general elections, Supreme Court decisions, and crises in the Middle East.
Corey pursued a double major in journalism and marketing at Rutgers Business School. He participated in several honor societies including Beta Gamma Sigma, Kappa Tau Alpha, and Cap & Skull. Before starting his career at NBC through an internship and the Page Program, he interned with CBS News.
Reflecting on his college days, Corey highlights a challenging moment during a referendum year when each Rutgers school voted on maintaining funding for The Daily Targum. He also recalls interviewing President Obama as a significant achievement validating student journalism's importance.
Discussing his work at NBC, Corey states: "Whenever there's major breaking news...we swoop in and we’ll cover it live as it happens." He emphasizes the value of informing people about current events.
To those graduating soon, Corey advises learning both hard skills like writing and soft skills like editorial judgment early on. He stresses that these skills are crucial across various fields.
