Two Rutgers alumni and one senior have been named Schwarzman Scholars, marking a historic first for the university. Tania Martinez, a 2022 graduate from Rutgers University-Camden, is the first recipient from that campus. Senior Chinonso Anyanwu from Rutgers University-Newark and alumna Nina Gohel from Rutgers University-New Brunswick were also selected for the 2025-2026 Class of Schwarzman Scholars.

The scholars are among 150 individuals representing 38 countries and 105 universities who will attend a fully funded master's degree program in global affairs at Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University in Beijing. This year's selection was made from nearly 5,000 applicants worldwide.

Anne Wallen, director of the Office of Distinguished Fellowships at Rutgers-New Brunswick, commented on the achievement: “Given the number of scholars globally, the fact that there are three from Rutgers is statistically pretty unlikely.” She added that it reflects well on the caliber of students at Rutgers.

The recipients represent three different campuses and come from families spanning three continents. Martinez expressed her gratitude: “I feel very lucky and very humbled to have been chosen.” She looks forward to learning in China as part of a cohort dedicated to public good.

Founded by Stephen A. Schwarzman in 2016, this scholarship aims to foster global leadership and understanding between China and other nations. Anyanwu is the third scholar from Rutgers-Newark to receive this honor, while Gohel is New Brunswick’s fifth scholar. In total, nine scholars have emerged from Rutgers over time.

Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway praised their achievements: “I couldn’t be prouder of our three Schwarzman Scholars and all they express about Rutgers—our diversity...and incredible achievements.”

Chinonso Anyanwu's journey took an unexpected turn when he suffered a knee injury during his first year at college. Originally aspiring to be a professional athlete, he redirected his focus towards business after his injury. He is now building Synergy, a startup aimed at improving financial literacy among youth using AI technology.

Anyanwu shared insights into his motivations: “Being Nigerian...my name was too difficult to pronounce...Being an athlete gave me some comfort.” Reflecting on China's economic progress inspires him as he prepares for his studies abroad.

Nina Gohel has been researching China's gender quota system as part of her Yenching Scholarship studies in China since fall 2023. Her work aims to develop models empowering women globally for equitable representation in politics.

Gohel emphasized her commitment: “Currently I am drawing insights...to develop a transferable model that empowers women...” She plans on contributing further through her career within U.S government roles related directly or indirectly with international relations involving China.

Tania Martinez continues her advocacy work while serving as assistant director within New York City's Department Of Small Business Services' intergovernmental affairs team post-graduation—she previously majored triple subjects including political science during undergraduate years under mentorship guidance provided by Laura Collins’ office advising fellowships development initiatives like Urban Fellows Program which led current role today; President Holloway recognized these efforts calling "the busiest person" back then!
