The Children's Hospital at Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick has been named a Certified Autism Center (CAC) by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This recognition is given to institutions whose staff have obtained autism-specific training, aimed at enhancing the care and experience for children with autism and sensory disorders.
The training equips hospital staff with skills to better understand the communication styles, sensory sensitivities, and behavioral cues of autistic children. These skills enable staff to create a supportive environment using clear communication, visual aids, and calming techniques.
Sensory items like fidget toys, sunglasses, and sound-cancelling headphones are part of the hospital's approach to assist children with autism. Soon, a mobile sensory station and communication boards will be available to support sensory needs.
"Achieving the status of a Certified Autism Center reflects Saint Peter’s commitment to providing high-quality, inclusive care to every pediatric patient," said Leslie D. Hirsch, President and CEO of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. "We strive to meet the unique needs of children with autism and their families."
The certification also supports parents, who often face anxiety during medical visits. Ensuring that staff are trained in best practices for working with autistic children can help parents and children feel understood and supported.
Ethel Cole, a mother from North Brunswick, appreciated the hospital's accreditation. “Knowing that Saint Peter’s staff is trained to understand and support children like my son means the world to me," said Cole.
Pam Harmon, Director of the Women and Children’s Division, stated, "With this certification, we demonstrate that our pediatric healthcare providers have the specialized training and tools to assist children with autism and other sensory issues."
Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman, commented, "This certification highlights the dedication of The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital to provide exceptional care to every child."
Since its inception in 2001, IBCCES has led the way in autism-related training and certification globally. It offers specific programs for hospitals to better serve the community.
IBCCES also manages CertifiedAutismCenter.com, providing parents with resources and listing certified locations.
