George Helmy, an alumnus of Rutgers University-Newark, has been appointed to the Rutgers University Board of Governors by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. His appointment was confirmed unanimously by both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the full Senate. Helmy's term will last until June 30, 2030.

Helmy expressed gratitude for his new role, stating, “I am thankful to Governor Murphy for the honor to join the Rutgers University Board of Governors.” He added that Rutgers holds personal significance as his alma mater and emphasized its importance to students and communities in New Jersey. Helmy is eager to support Rutgers’ mission during challenging times for higher education.

Currently serving as executive vice president and chief external affairs and policy officer at RWJBarnabas Health, Helmy brings extensive experience from both public and private sectors. He previously held a temporary position as U.S. Senator from September to December 2024, where he worked on several committees including banking and foreign relations. During this time, he introduced bills such as the Tax Relief for Middle Class Families Act.

Amy Towers, chair of the Board of Governors, welcomed Helmy's appointment with enthusiasm: “As Rutgers navigates the important task of selecting its next president, George’s leadership will be critical for our institution.” She highlighted his strategic leadership skills and commitment to New Jersey.

Prior to his congressional role appointed by Murphy, Helmy was the governor’s chief of staff involved in pandemic response efforts among other state initiatives. His earlier career includes roles with former U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker.

Helmy holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Rutgers-Newark and a master’s degree in finance and management from Harvard University.

The Board of Governors at Rutgers consists of 15 voting members responsible for university governance. The board includes appointees confirmed by the New Jersey State Senate along with elected representatives from within university structures.

Rutgers University is recognized as a leading national research institution established in 1766 with campuses across New Jersey serving over 69,000 students.
